WARNING: NEVER GIVE CHOCOLATE TO DOGS!

Dean Koontz is always giving chocolate to the dogs in his books. This is dangerous, and can be deadly! Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Just because it doesn't kill a dog outright, doesn't mean it isn't damaging the dog internally. The darker the chocolate, the more harmful, but all chocolate is poisonous to dogs.

Now on to the review...

As others have noted, Dean Koontz is very formulaic. That doesn't mean it isn't entertaining,. (I love Perry Mason, but there is never a doubt about the outcome of his trials.) This only becomes a problem when you read them back to back, as I'm doing now. Both The Servants of Twilight and Watchers have couples on the run. The couples in both books, have to liquidate assets, get supplies etc. I realized these scenes were the same in both books, with the only difference being the cash amounts. This doesn't make these stories less fun. They are what they are, diverting pulp fiction.

Koontz is easy and engaging, a pleasure to read. You might not like the subject matter, but the books flow along seamlessly. I'm also struck by his usual phraseology. There shouldn't be anything remarkable about it, but unfortunately there is. His word choices are far above anything I'd read in a more "modern" book, and that is sad. I feel like I'm getting off onto some berating diatribe about modern fiction, so I'll go back to the book.

This book is a must for dog lovers. If you have a dog, and you enjoy the supernatural or horror genres, then you'll like this. Most people anthropomorphize their pets, and animals in general. We shouldn't, animals have their own hidden languages, and we could understand these if we took the time. But this book begs the question, "What if animals could really talk to us?" That's essentially what this book is about. Yes, there's monsters, hitmen and government agents chasing damaged people who are finding each other, and love. There's a fun story that's easy to read, and reminds us of the special place animals can have in our lives. That's a book worth reading
